Winthrop Baptist Church (Deep River, CT) is seeking a Director of Music to help lead our congregation in joyful worship. This is a part-time role for a creative musician to bring their gifts and passion for church music to a small but welcoming congregation.

Founded in 1832, Winthrop Baptist Church is the second oldest American Baptist Church in Connecticut and has a rich history of faith and community service. Our church family is committed to worship, fellowship, and outreach, blending tradition with openness to new expressions of ministry. We are affiliated with the American Baptist Churches of Connecticut (ABCCONN), a regional body of the American Baptist Churches USA, which provides support and connection to congregations across the state.
About the Role
The Director of Music will provide music for Sunday morning worship and collaborate with the pastor and diaconate on hymn and music selection.
Responsibilities include:
- Selecting and preparing hymns and other worship music for Sunday morning services in collaboration with the worship team and leadership
- Performing music for weekly worship (instrumental and/or vocal, solo or with others)
- Support special services (Christmas, Easter, Maundy Thursday, etc.) and other liturgical events as needed
- In the future, recruit and direct a choir or musical ensemble as the congregation grows
Qualifications:
- Proficiency in at least one instrument (piano, organ, guitar, etc.)
- Ability to lead congregational singing with confidence
- Comfort with traditional hymns and openness to varied styles of worship music
- Strong collaboration and communication skills
- Prior experience in church music ministry is a plus but not required
Time commitment & compensation:
This position requires approximately 4 hours per week—2 on Sunday mornings and 2 for preparation or rehearsal. Compensation is negotiable. Additional services such as weddings or funerals will be compensated separately. As the role expands with future growth, the board will revisit both time commitment and salary.
We are open to a wide range of musical backgrounds and instruments and are looking for someone who feels called to support and enhance our worship through music. Compensation is commensurate with experience and the scope of weekly responsibilities.
